Respondent:  Terrance Elliott, District: 1
Date: 8/28/07

1. In your opinion, what are the top three problems for the county?
A. Clean water, both drinking and recreational
B. Balanced growth
C. Highway safety

2. Why are these problems?
A. Our waters both recreational and drinking are in need of serious attention. Safe drinking water is a necessity and our supply is not infinite. The recreational waters in the county support the tourism industry which is vital to the financial stability not only of the district but the entire county. How long will we be able to eat and sell seafood from our waters if we do not pay close attention to their quality?
B. We need growth and businesses and jobs. But how is this development affecting our tax rate, property values and infrastructure? As residences increase infrastructure costs increase and eventually our taxes increase. We need to find the balance between more growth and the increased costs that this brings to existing residents.
C. The number of fatalities on the causeway and county highways recently are cause for genuine concern.

3. What would you do about them if elected to the Board of Supervisors?
A. Together with the other board members I would hope to be able to come up with fair and equitable means of controlling growth and protecting our ground water, bays and wetlands
B. Balanced growth is a county-wide problem which needs a county wide effort of all the Supervisors working together to craft a Comprehensive Plan and Ordinances that enhance business opportunities on Chincoteague and elsewhere as well as preserve the resources that attract people here in the first place.
C. The first thing I would like to see is a no left turn sign off the causeway to the county recreation area by the queens Sound bridge. Teamwork between the board, VDOT and local law enforcement agencies is the answer to reducing the amount of deaths and accidents on our county roads.

4. What do you think about water in the county – Storm water, Ground water, seawater, bay water?
Chincoteague is in a water crisis -- we need help in wastewater and drinking water and we need to preserve our shellfish and fishing industries.

5. What do you think of the recent (June, 2007) report on the Accomack County Public Safety System?
I am in favor of Ron Wolfe’s suggestion to get 10 acceptable recommendations from each of the 15 fire districts in the county and find 6 or 7 common recommendations and go from there to start the county working together. I know that the greatest risk identified in the report is from storm surges, and this is really important for Chincoteague. Voters in Chincoteague should realize that this will take a county wide effort working together to address.
