The butterfly is a tiger swallowtail, which is the Virginia state butterfly. It symbolizes the parts of the shore that we seek to preserve and protect, that is-our natural environment. The yellow flower is a butterfly bush which supplies nectar to all butterflies. This represents the sound government and zoning ordinances that allow natural ecosystems, with flowers that support butterflies, to exist. The bee pollinates the flowers. This is the SONs group that has as its mission keeping the natural ecosystems intact and protected.

Save Our Necks is now an Accomack county-wide organization.
The mission of Save Our Necks is to advocate, promote, and support
responsible growth and leadership in Accomack County.

Responsible growth requires management of natural and fiscal resources of the county so that:
  • Our rural quality of life is preserved,
  • Economic growth is based on and enhances our natural resources,
  • Development is located for efficient public services,
  • Environmental assets are preserved and protected.
  • County tax increases are minimized.

Responsible growth needs to be based on:
  • A comprehensive land use plan based on a realistic population growth forecast,
  • A thoughtful long term capital improvement plan, and
  • Zoning and regulations that prevent the squandering of natural resources and that do not place future financial burdens on taxpayers.

Responsible growth means understanding the relationships between complex issues.  It means that:
  • Accomack county seeks out and promotes new agricultural opportunities.
  • Businesses are encouraged that increase jobs while expanding the tax base.
  • Large contiguous tracts of farms and woodlands are preserved.
  • Shorelines, wetlands, and necks are preserved as intact ecological communities.
  • The Chesapeake Bay Act is extended to the seaside.
  • Growth is limited in groundwater recharge areas and areas unsuitable for in-ground septic.

Responsible growth requires county leadership that has foresight.
Responsible growth encourages development consistent with these objectives.
Responsible growth requires the courage and integrity to deny development that does not meet or exceed these expectations.
