Septage Lagoon at Coal Kiln Site Wachapreague Septage Lagoon
Dump and Junkyard near Onley Accomac, Virginia. Settled c1650. New Road through Wetlands
Unenforced wetlands violations abound in Accomack County. Wetlands are routinely filled, built on, or traversed by roads. This appears to be a major road improvement done without a permit on Chincoteague.
Cedarview Subdivision located on Nandua Creek Chincoteague Trailer Park, typical of high density and no planning Commercial Activity
Commercial storage and repair facility located in the wetlands in Chincoteague. Note what appears to be a sheen of petroleum pollution in water at lower right.
View showing Craddock Neck in Southern Accomack County Hamlet of Craddockville Subdivision located near Deep Creek Dreamland Trailer Park on Route 13 north of Accomac. Note derelict trailers at back of property. Scenic Harborton Developer proposed nearly 300 single family dwellings on this property. Subdivision application was approved despite fierce citizen resistance. Approval was withdrawn after developers failed to make deadlines. Note drainage pattern in foreground going directly into the Atlantic Ocean. Hopeland Landing - Imagine 300 homes on this farmland. Developer was not going to be required to improve the road despite the VDOT estimates that vehicle trips would increase from about 100 per day to nearly 2800. View of the ag land south of the County Airport, typical of the Shore. Another suburban development concept on 30,000 square foot lots squeezed onto sensitive environmental land near Pitts Creek in the northwestern corner of the County. Lynhaven Circle Trailer Park
Typical of unplanned trailer parks with private roads. Here, 28% of property owners are delinquent 4 years or more in payment of property taxes yet the County spent $94,000 and VDOT contributed an unknown amount improving the roads.
Historic Modest Town, nearly the entrance to a 300 lot, high density subdivision. Typical of the complete lack of planning controls in the County prior to Save Our Necks involvement. New Road through wetlands
Unenforced wetlands violations abound in Accomack County. Protection of wetlands throughout the County is of vital importance in mitigating the effects of surface water runoff. If a road interrupts a flow pattern, surface pollutants are trapped. This road is on Chincoteague.
The Perdue Chicken processing plant on Rt 13, largest user of water in the County. Typical of a “put it anywhere you like” attitude. “Saxis is like butter melting in the sun.” Grayson Chesser Satellite View of Nelsonia and Modest Town.
Large, white, rectangular box of land represents the site of the Hopeland Landing and Hopeland Retreat proposed subdivisions, subsequently revoked. Nearly 300 single family homes on 30,000 square foot lots were to be placed here. Note especially the brown streak running east-west on the property. This represents the prevailing drainage pattern, directly into Kegotank Bay. Satellite View of Lower Accomack County.
Spectacular view from space of our fragile ecosystem showing from bottom to top, Occohonnock Creek, Craddock Creek and Pungoteague and Nandua Creeks. Surface water drainage impacts and erosion patterns are clearly visible.
Satellite View of Wallops Island and Chincoteague.
Another beautiful satellite view showing the precarious and delicate nature of our Oceanside Landforms. Flow patterns in and around Chincoteague Bay are clearly visible.
