- Joint Work-Session (Planning Commission and Board of Supervisors). 7:00-9:00 (Metompkin Elementary School).

The Comprehensive Plan update will be discussed. Milton Herd will present. Part of the rewrite was discussed at the May 8th Planning. Commission. Meeting. Several SONs members have reviewed it and it appears to be very weak. Most recommended actions are the never accomplished actions of the 1997 plan! The Supervisors could set a Public Hearing. This plan is crucial to the final Zoning Ordinance having any teeth, and all S.O.Ns. members are urged to attend.

May 16th, 2007
- The Eastern Shore of Virginia Tourism Commission invites the Shore community to the unveiling of the Eastern Shore Brand, 4pm at the Shore Bank Headquarters conference room, Onley.

How do we want people to feel when they see the words Eastern Shore of Virginia? How can we entice travelers to experience the Eastern Shore instead of going elsewhere? How can we help our businesses sell their Eastern Shore products?

The brand was developed after nearly two years of feedback and data collection from the broad based Eastern Shore Tourism Alliance along with other local experts, guidance from the Virginia Tourism Corporation and an extensive Eastern Shore Branding Strategy project in partnership with Temple University's Fox School of Business.

You may want to check out the brand on the way to the Board of Supervisors meeting later on.

May 16th, 2007
- Board of Supervisors meeting. 7:30 (Metompkin Elementary. School).

A PUBLIC HEARING will be held on 6 Agricultural and Forestal Districts (Atlantic, Craddockville, Leemont, Painter, Scarborough Neck, and Shields). These districts include 24,000 acres of land. The Planning Commission and Advisory Committee is recommending modifying some and continuing others, but the supervisors can also terminate any districts. The creation of these districts in the 1980’s resulted in tax breaks for farming and also conservation of farmland. Unfortunately, many subdivision applications have been approved without legally required landowner requests for withdrawal from the A and F districts. The county has tried to begin observing these requirements again, so recommended modifications reflect this.

The Accomack Board of Supervisors and Planning Commission was in attendance. This was a very important meeting since it was one of the few times that our Board of Supervisors were exposed to any future economic vision of the shore that doesn't involve complete suburbanization.
