Septage Lagoon at Coal Kiln Site
There are three septage lagoons located in Accomack County. Septic tank effluent, pumped from your residential system, is taken to these sites and dumped into these ponds. The ponds are unlined meaning that whatever goes into them leeches through the soil into the water table. This photograph shows the adjacency of a ditch leading along the tree line into the creek that ultimately drains into the Machipongo River. Heavy rains and a high water table, coupled with poorly drained soils, make surface water runoff issues a major concern.
