Wachapreague Septage Lagoon
Accomack County is one of only two or three counties left in the State that have, operate and permit open and unlined septage lagoons. Local septic pumpers, like the one shown here in the picture, pump septic tanks and haul their cargo to these sites. The sewage is pumped into these lagoons which have no lining whatsoever. This particular site shows no evidence of any maintenance, mowing, ditching or ponding. There are also no earthen berms evident to prevent storm and surface water runoff from carrying the untreated and highly toxic effluent into our streams and creeks.
